Beard moss (Usnea lichen) hanging from a monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) in Conguillio national park. The monkey puzzle tree is often found in gardens all over the US and Europe. Sometimes it is regarded as a sign of bad taste in gardening. The real deal in Chile, its native country, is completely different. In the lakes region it forms majestic forests like pictured on the left. When it's grown to full size it bears little resemblance to the things you see in people's front yards.

View from the ridge in Conguillio NP. This is said to be the best short hike in Chile.

Austral Conure or Austral Parakeet - Enicognathus ferrugineus

Austral Conure or Austral Parakeet - Enicognathus ferrugineus - on a Fire bush (Notro) tree. This parrot lives in the cold southern regions of Chile and Argentina and is the parrot with the southernmost range.

Gloomy weather aroud the lake in Conguillio - spring was just starting and we were the very first campers of the season here. We were greeted with a shower of sleet. There were just a few loggers present who were working in the area.

Chimango Caracara - Milvago chimango temucoensis This Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango temucoensis) was attracted to our cheese and managed to take a bite while we were admiring the scenery.

This friendly fox (Grey Fox, Dusicyon griseus) came to check for leftovers, pleasantly surprised by the early arrival of some campers

volcano llaima conguillio1.jpg (20082 bytes) Volcan Llaima never sleeps. Its lava flows can be seen all over the place en route to the campsite. Some areas are completely barren. There are several small lakes which have been created by the flows where small streams have become blocked.

Chilean Fire bush, Notro, Embothrium coccineum

A Notro flower (Chilean Fire bush, Embothrium coccineum). This tree occurs throughout the southern half of Chile.
Hornopirén forest, a national park, is located just south of where the Chilean coast suddenly breaks up into a thousand islands, south of Puerto Montt. A bus and ferry ride takes you to the town of Hórnopiren. From there it's a 10 km hike to where the park more or less starts - you gradually enter unspoilt areas through a very long logging trail. The forest type here is evergreen temperate rain forest. hornopiren

Hornopirén. Probably a species of Fuchsia, the unopened flowers make it difficult to determine the species. flowers hornopiren

Flowers in Hornopirén forest. A climbing vine. I wasn't able to indentify these, suggestions are welcome  through the main page email link.
Puerto Montt, the main port in this area. It has a somewhat Scottish or even Scandinavian appearance. It's a somewhat sleazy place which has several old-fashioned run-down sailor's bars. Definitely worth a look.  puerto montt
